Mrs. Mary Anna Patterson Smith, 93, of Smiths Station, AL passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Arbor Springs in Opelika, AL after suffering with dementia for several decades.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am (EST) on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL with Dr. David Kees officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19, the family requests the use of masks and social distancing.
Mrs. Smith was born May 28, 1928 in Crawford County, GA, daughter of the late James Homer Patterson and Euna Mae Hatchett Patterson. She graduated Crawford County High School in 1945 as Valedictorian. She served as a Civilian Federal Employee at Ft. Benning for ten years. Mrs. Smith was a faithful member of Smiths Station Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, holding the office of Worthy Matron many times. She was also active in the Phenix City Shrinettes, holding numerous offices. Upon retirement, she and Raymond enjoyed traveling and seeing other parts of the country. She was a fabulous cook and prepared family meals as long as she was able for her children and grandchildren! No one could match her delicious fried chicken! She enjoyed putting vegetables up every year from their home grown garden. Above all, she loved spending time and making memories with her family whom she dearly loved!
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Davidson; two sisters, Grace Patterson Burch and June Patterson Nasworthy; two brothers, William “Billy” Patterson and Carlton Patterson.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Raymond Smith; two daughters, Norma Mixon and husband Henry of Warm Springs, GA; Cheryl Culpepper and husband Eddie of Opelika, AL; a son, Marvin Smith and wife Mary of Joelton, TN; a son-in-law, Jerry Davidson, Sr.; a sister, Dorothy Patterson Walton of Ft. Valley, GA; a brother, Eugene Patterson of Knoxville, GA; special sister in law, Sandra Patterson of Byron, GA; twelve grandchildren, Kathy Davidson, Jerry Davidson (Peggy), Kelly Drye, Vicki Atherton (David), Cindy Mixon, Mary Leverett (Mike), Melissa Hughes (Billy), Doug Mixon (Heidi), Jimmy Smith (Nikki), Maria Smith, Steve Hardin(Marie) and Carly Culpepper; nineteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
