Mary Sue Smith

Mary Sue Smith, age, 74, resident of Covington, Georgia and former resident of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020 at Piedmont Newton Hospital, Covington, Georgia.  Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 US Hwy 431N, Phenix City, Alabama on Friday, March 6, 2020, 2 p.m. with Reverend Dwayne Dean officiating.  Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 1-2 p.m.

Mrs. Smith, daughter of the late John Mullins and Gertrude McKinney Mullins, was born September 30, 1945 in Harlan, Kentucky.  She was retired from the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) where she faithfully worked for over 25 years.  Mrs. Smith enjoyed fishing and going to Thrift Stores, but enjoyed spending quality time with her children and grandchildren the most. The family remembers her as a loving woman who loved her husband, children, and grandchildren immensely.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Wanda Newman, Faye Gray, and Carol Whitehead.  She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Martin Smith of Covington, Georgia; two daughters, Kathy Balkcom of Covington, Georgia and Rylan Smith of Winter Springs, Florida; one son, Larry Wheeler of Smith Station, Alabama; four grandchildren, Mindy Wheeler of Phenix City, Alabama, Josh Nunnelly of Covington, Georgia, Lauren Wheeler Holland and her husband Tommy of Smith Station, Alabama, and Matt Nunnelly and his wife Nicki of Loganville, Georgia; six great-grandchildren, Anna Holland, Khloe Nunnelly, Kameron Doherty, Hunter Nunnelly, Karmin Wheeler, and Wyatt Holland; many other relatives and friends.
