Matthew Scott Watson, affectionately known as Matt, was born on May 20, 1967, in Columbus, Georgia. He left this world on October 6, 2024, at his residence, leaving behind a legacy defined by kindness, love, and excellence in his craft. The family plans to have a memorial service at a later date, according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Columbus.
Matt built a remarkable career as a brick mason, a trade he proudly learned from his father. His unwavering commitment to his work and ethical standards earned him a loyal client base that spanned decades. In an era where many succumbed to the pressures of inflation, Matt chose steadfastness, insisting on keeping his prices the same over the years, a testament to his principles and the respect he garnered in his community.
Beyond his professional life, Matt was a true gentleman with a heart full of compassion. Those who knew him enjoyed his quick wit and infectious laughter. He shared a profound bond with his beloved wife of nearly 27 years, Dawn Callihan Watson. Their love was evident in everything they did together; they were truly inseparable, each other’s hearts intertwined. Together, they created countless cherished memories, embodying a partnership marked by mutual respect and deep affection.
A man of varied interests, Matt was passionate about many things. In his younger years, he showcased his athleticism as a talented pitcher in baseball, coached by his father throughout high school. Those who witnessed his tenacity on the field will fondly remember the thrill of watching him strike out even the most intimidating opponents. In addition to baseball, Matt was an ardent supporter of Tennessee football, a passion he proudly carried despite being surrounded by Georgia fans. Win or lose, he never missed an opportunity to cheer for his team.
Matt is survived by his devoted wife, Dawn, and their children: daughter Hunter Nicole Watson, of Pine Mountain, Georgia, and son Peyton Matthew Watson, along with his fiancée Marleigh "Bella" Daniels, of Hamilton, Georgia. He also leaves behind his sisters, Linda Morrison (Richard) of Adairsville, Georgia, and Connie Richman (Jim) of Ozark, Alabama, as well as his brother Michael Watson (Christine) of Lithia Springs, Georgia. Additionally, he is survived by his loving mother-in-law, Pat Callihan, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched. Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Troy Watson and Betty Jo Watson, and his father-in-law, Inman Callihan.
Matt's journey through life left a mark on all who knew him. As we remember Matt, we hold dear the laughter he brought into our lives, the strong moral compass that guided him, and the beautiful love story he shared with Dawn. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved him.
