Millie Jean Cotton

October 17, 1943 — December 6, 2018

Millie Jean Herring Cotton, 75, of Phenix City, AL passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, December 6, 2018 in the comfort of her home in Phenix City while surrounded by the loving arms of her children and grandchildren.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm EST on Monday, December 10, 2018 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home (Vance Memorial Chapel) in Phenix City with Pastor Ronnie Chaney officiating.  Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Monday one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm EST at the funeral home in Phenix City.

Mrs. Cotton was born October 17, 1943 in Enterprise, AL to the late A B Herring and Annie C. Lamb Jones.  For many years Millie had worked with Colonial Inn in Phenix City and later entered into business as owner of My Sisters Café in Perry, GA where she enjoyed and loved her many opportunities of meeting customers and new friendships.  She was a former member and helped organize annual events for the River Rat Reunions.  She was passionate about the Atlanta Braves and the Alabama Crimson Tide and was a huge fan of both.  She loved being outdoors working her pecan farm and riding her tractor.  Her greatest joy was the love of her family, people, and fellowship.  She was a Baptist by faith.  Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Gene Cotton, a son, Dennis Eugene Cotton, one sister, Bobbie Herring, and a brother, Don Herring.

She is survived by her daughter, Stacy Cotton Fillingim, two sons, Steven “Steve” Cotton, Sr., and Christopher “Chris” Cotton, two sisters, Barbara Ann Herring, and Jeannie Hatten and husband Clyde, two brothers, Max Herring, and Jerry Herring and wife Jan, sister-in-law, Dianne Herring; (3) grandchildren, Courtni B. Brooks (Doc), Shelbi A. Lopretto (Adam), and CJ Cotton, and (6) precious great grandchildren, Bryson, Leilani, Jada, Mason, Amya, and Nevaeh, several nieces, nephews, extended family, and many caring friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to the Columbus Hospice House or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Ms. Millie.
