Orton Davis "Od" Hamrick

July 16, 1915 — December 18, 2018

 

Orton Davis Hamrick (known as OD), 103, of Phenix City, AL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon,  December 18th , 2018 surrounded by his loving family. 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM EST Saturday, December 22nd, 2018, at Lakewood Baptist Church in Phenix City with Rev. Charles Keown officiating.  A private interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Friday evening, December 21st, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM EST at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.

OD was born July16th, 1915, in Arley, Alabama, son of the late William Harrison Hamrick and Ruby Dickerson Hamrick.  He was one of 11 children.  As a teenager growing up during the depression he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps on public works projects in Tennessee.  He was a World War II veteran.  He moved his wife and family to Phenix City in 1941 and operated a Gulf service station on 14th Street before starting Hamrick Tire in 1957.  He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Arnold Hamrick, William O. Hamrick, and Hewitt D. Hamrick and sister's Cheryl Dean Hamrick, Shelby Jean Hamrick, and Obera Hamrick Knighten.   

He was married to his late wife, Irene Gay Hamrick, for 58 years until her death in 1995.  He is survived by children Annette Phelps (Billy) of Columbus, GA, Gwenda Sherman (Craig) of Metairie, LA, Donald Hamrick (Patricia) of Phenix City, AL, Sandra Baker (George) of Sherwood, AR, and Connie Cook-Nicks of Bradenton, FL, grandchildren Cyndi Phelps Conner, Michael Phelps (Melissa), Elizabeth Phelps Lee (Todd),  Julie Sherman Morgan (Brian), Kelly Sherman Hester (Micah), Amy Sherman Argiropoulos (Chris), Brittany Hamrick Harvey (Joshua), Jonathan Hamrick (Amanda), Don Baker (Lea), Shannon Baker Rice (Joel), Wade Cook (Ashley), Christi Cook Martin, 29 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.  Surviving sisters are Arrie Lee Vincent of Logan, AL, Mavinee Bishop of Arley, AL, Roxie Allen of Eufaula, AL, and Ivanell Harrison (Council) of Fort Mitchell, AL.  He also leaves behind numerous other family and friends that were precious to him.

He was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the Amen Choir.  He planted a vegetable garden every year sharing the produce with friends.  Things he enjoyed were watching Alabama football and NASCAR and being with his family sharing good times together.  His spirit is carried on in his family.
