Rachel, daughter of Brenda Jean Hill Thomas and the late James David Thomas, was born March 15, 1974 in Dothan, Alabama. She obtained her degree in Cosmetology and started her own business before she was 20. She has owned and operated Rachel’s Salon in Phenix City for 30 years. Her customers became her friends and family. She always made time for them even if it was after normal business hours.
Rachel had a heart for God and the less fortunate. She was an active member of First Assembly of God, Phenix City. She went on several overseas mission trips and was passionate about her work with the youth at her church. She also found time to volunteer at local homeless shelters. She was an active member of the Republican Party. She was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and yelled “Roll Tide” every Saturday in the fall. She loved spending time with her friends, family, nieces and nephews who she adored. Her family and friends remember her as a lady who gave her life in service to others.
Rachel was preceded in death by her loving father James David “Dave” Thomas of Clayton, AL, her grandparents, Marvin and Lois Thomas of Marshall, TX and Floyd and Peggy Hill of Moss Point, MS, and her much adored dog “Handsome Jack”.
Rachel is survived by her beloved stepson, Andrew Hartzog of Fort Mitchell, Alabama; Mother, Brenda Hill McWaters of Gautier, Mississippi; brother, David (Margaret) Thomas of Buford, GA; sisters, Tracy (David) Bokath of Cantonment, FL and Juliet (Donnie) Scudder of Ocean Springs, MS; 10 nieces and nephews; 2 great nephews and one great niece; 14 aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins and other relatives. The number that called her friend is a testament to how well she cared for others. Her vivacious and giving spirit will be missed by many.
