Rev. W. H. Thompson, Jr., 87, of Phenix City, AL passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at his home.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am EDT, on Friday, July 17, 2015, at Golden Acres Baptist Church, with Rev. John Rigby and Rev. Chris Blanton officiating, according to Vance Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at New Harmony Baptist Church cemetery in Thomaston, GA. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Rev. Thompson was born March 31, 1928, in Thomaston, GA, son of the late William H. Thompson, Sr. and Lizzie Lou McKinley Thompson. He had a passion for ministry and served the Lord over 40 years at various churches. Rev. Thompson served as the minister at Mountain View Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church in Thomaston, GA; Second Baptist Church in Ft. Payne, AL; West Side Baptist Church in Lanett, AL and 30 years at Golden Acres Baptist Church in Phenix City, AL.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Thompson; a son, Butch Thompson, three sisters, Elsie Ellerby, Mary Grace Jones and Martha Gibson; and four brothers, Felton Thompson, Bobby Thompson, Jimmy Thompson and Hugh Thompson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gladys Pope Thompson of Phenix City, AL; two daughters, Jo Thompson Blanton and husband Randy of Atlanta, GA and Penny Thompson Keller and husband Kyle of Rougemont, NC; four sisters, Betty Sue Wilson, Sarah Hearn, Joyce Waller and Linda Walker, all of Barnesville, GA; two brothers, Moses Thompson and Charles Thompson, both of Barnesville, GA; six grandchildren, Robbie, Jeffery, Chris, Erin, Lincoln and McKinley; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many other extended family, church family and caring friends.
