Richard “Dick” H. Lowther, Sr., 95, of Smiths Station, AL passed away late Monday night, November 27, 2023, in the comfort of his home in Smiths Station.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 pm EST on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City with Dr. David Kees officiating, according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City. The family will receive friends after the graveside service.
Mr. Lowther was born July 16, 1928, in Smiths Station, AL, son the late William Guerry Lowther and Rubye Stoddard Lowther. He was married to Edith Driggers on November 20, 1949, in Bleeker, AL. Mr. Lowther attended Lee County Schools in Smiths Station, AL, and graduated from Auburn University, class of 1949. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and attended Artillery schools at Fort Sill, OK, and was a Veteran of the Korean War. After his military service, he returned to his home place and with his brother Charles, owned and operated Lowther Brothers Texaco and Lowther’s Phillips 66 Service Stations for over 30 years. He served as a Director in Octoco, Inc. and Rock Creek Inc. He was proud to raise cows as a cattle farmer in the Summerville Road area in Smiths Station on which his ancestors had settled in 1840. He believed in the American values of hard work ethics, honesty, and faith. He enjoyed nature, the outdoors, bird hunting, and the love and fellowship of his family. He was a long-time member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Smiths Station.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Edith Driggers Lowther, and three brothers, Charles Lowther, Guerry Lowther and William Lowther.
He is survived by two sons, William “Bill” Lowther and wife Jean of Smiths Station, AL and Richard H. Lowther, Jr. and wife Kathy of Headland, AL; two grandsons, C. Stoddard Lowther and wife Melanie of Houston, TX and Joshua Bennett Lowther and wife Arriele of Smiths Station, AL; five great grandchildren, Ellis Anne Lowther, Levi Lowther, Emma Lowther, Mary Grace Lowther and Annabelle Strickland; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and many caring friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church or Smiths Station Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Richard “Dick” H. Lowther, Sr.
