Richard Emmett Spires

Richard Emmett Spires, 74, of Phenix City, AL passed away Wednesday, October 05, 2016 at Gentiva Hospice in Columbus, GA.  A funeral service will be held at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA on Saturday, October 08, 2016 beginning at 2:00 P.M. EST with Pastor Rick Thorne  officiating.  The interment will conclude the service at Parkhill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M. EST on Saturday, prior to the service.  

Mr. Spires was born November 4, 1941 in Columbus, GA to the late, John B. Spires and Alma Speed Spires.  He was Baptist by Faith.  He worked and retired as a supervisor for Field Crest Mills with over forty-five years with the company.  He enjoyed working on cars and camping.

Other than his parents, Mr. Spires is predeceased by his son, Mark Steven Spires, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-four years, Barbara Mae Spires; two daughters:  Cheryl Gilmore of Salem AL and Cindy Hardwick (Kenny) of Phenix City, AL; one son, David James Spires of Phenix City, AL; one brother, Robert Wayne Spires of Wetumpka, AL; and six grandchildren:  Jonathan Powell, Amy Sims, Brandon Powell, Sara Beth Stiller, Austin “Blake” Hardwick and Cameron Hardwick; six great grandchildren:  Gavin Powell, Parker Sims, Miller Sims, Mayson Folds Powell, Londen Stiller and Jaxon Stiller;  Several nieces and nephews; and his fur babies:  Bella, Bobo, Baby Girl, Elliemae, Charlie, Sassy, Poo Bear, Pretty Boy, Prisse, Marley and Mace.
