Richard L. Guerrero
Ret. Command SGT Major, Richard L. Guerrero, 67, of Phenix City, Alabama passed away Friday September 18, 2015 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm EDT Monday, September 21, 2015 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City with Rev. Marvin Minton officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Richard was born June 13, 1948 and grew up in San Marcos, TX. He retired from the United States Army after 22 years of service. Richard served in Vietnam as well as several other duty locations during his tenure with the military. After retiring, he worked in management roles with T-Mobile and Boise Packaging. Richard was a member of Crawford Road Baptist Church, where he attended Sunday School, sang in the choir and with the Four the Father Quartet. Richard also previously served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Phenix City, AL.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Flores Black and a maternal grandfather, Rev. Jose Flores.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Carol Gunter Guerrero; maternal grandmother, Concepcion “Conchie” Flores who helped raise him; one daughter, Leslie Johnston Lupton and husband Matt of Falcon, CO; two sons, Richard L. Guerrero II of Shelbyville, IN and Leighton G. Guerrero of Phenix City, AL; three sisters, Jenny Marie, Roxanne and Joanne; two brothers, Bobby and Steve; three grandchildren, Jack, Luke and Kylie Lupton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Terra and Danny Kirkland and Julie and Charles Wright; many other extended family, church family and caring friends.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Crawford Road Baptist Church, 2708 Hwy 80 West, Phenix City, AL 36870 or Columbus Hospice 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the many health care providers that cared for Richard during his illness.
