Robert D. Herrington Iii

SSG (Ret) Robert David Herrington, III, age 78, resident of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away at his residence on Saturday, January 25, 2020.  Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2020, 12:30 p.m., with Reverend Mike Turner officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. 

Mr. Herrington, son of the late Robert David Herrington, Jr. and Sally LaVerne Adams Herrington, was born February 14, 1941 in Cordele, Georgia.  He was veteran of the U.S. Army.  During his distinguished military career, he served two tours in Vietnam and many stateside assignments.  After 14 years of honorable military service he was medically retired.  During the years in the military, he was many medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star; Army Commendation Medal (w/1 OLC); Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device 60.  After leaving the military, he began a career a career with Civil Service at Fort Benning an later worked for AAFES, Fort Benning PX until his retirement. 

Mr. Herrington was a quiet man, but when he spoke “everyone listened.”  He loved NASCAR, a huge fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr; loved Auburn football; fishing; hunting; and spending time with his cats, Murphy and Mikey.  The family said many people would remember him as a frequent customer of Waffle House on Stadium Drive in Phenix City.  Mr. Herrington will be remembered as a great father; husband; grandfather; and military man. 

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nell Wise Herrington.  He is survived by three grandsons, Robert “Robb” D. Herrington, V of Decatur, Georgia, Cameron Herrington of Phenix City, Alabama, and Gavin Herrington of Savannah. Georgia; two great-great granddaughters, Lucia Herrington and Claire Elise Herrington; many other relatives and friends.
