Robert Howard Schrecengost

Robert Howard Schrecengost, a.k.a. Robert Saxman, 92, of Smiths Station, AL died while at Arbor Springs Health and Rehab in Opelika, AL on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 with his daughter by his side.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00 PM (EST) on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery with U. S. Army Honors according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL with Rev. Jeff Garrett officiating.

Robert was born December 3, 1929 in Dayton, PA. After graduating from High School in 1948 he enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served in the Korean War with the 2^nd Infantry Division, followed by Occupation Duty with the 7^th U. S. Army Europe, followed by a 2^nd tour of Korea.  SSG Schrecengost also served two tours in Viet Nam, the 1^st with the 1/7^th 1^st Cav. Division, and the 2^nd with the Airmobile 4/31^st Inf. 196^th Light Inf. BOE, American, Division. Between his Army enlistments, he enlisted for four years in the U. S. Air Force being assigned to the 1094^th Support Squadron, USAF Special Weapons, Manzano, NM. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the following medals and decorations: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star W/OLC, Korean Service Medal w/3 Battle Stars, Viet Nam Service Medal w/1 Silver Star.

Robert was a Life Member of Disabled American Veterans, Fountain City Chapter # 56, a Lifetime member of VFW Post # 5228 and a 24 year member of American Legion Post # 35, Columbus, GA.

He was predeceased in death by his wife of 49 years, Angelita Pino Schrecengost his “Desert Flower” and a son, Robert Earl Schrecengost; mother, Alberta Holtmeyer; several sibling and other family members.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol Britton, Salem, AL and a son, Gary Schrecengost of Humble, TX; grandchildren, Brad Melton and wife Nicole of Smiths Station, AL, Christy Wiggins, Derick Schrecengost and wife Lori of Salem, AL, Monica Schrecengost, Luke Britton, and Hannah Britton; great-grandchildren, Tucker Melton, Hazel Wiggins, Isabella Wiggins, Rylan Schrecengost, Taeley Schrecengost, Hudson Schrecengost, Tucker Melton and Gage Dollar; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
