Robert “Bob” Huddleston Cantrell, 98 of Phenix City, AL, formerly of Tallassee, AL, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at the Columbus Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm EST, on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Vance Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Howle officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 pm est (2:30 pm cen) at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tallassee, AL. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:00 until 1:00 pm EST, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
Mr. Cantrell was born on January 4, 1918 in Speigener, AL son of the late Thomas Lafeyette Cantrell and Minttie Coralee Cantrell. He worked at the Tallassee Mill where he retired in 1981. In 1945 he joined the United States Marines and served until his second daughter was born. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodwork, bottle collecting, gardening and watching Alabama Football and the Atlanta Braves. He and his wife Vernie attended Ladonia Baptist Chruch.
He was a very outgoing, fun loving person and enjoyed life to the fullest, until he became ill in June 2016. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and wife of 19 years, Vernie.
Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Claudie Lou Allen Cantrell, his daughter Julie Gayle Cantrell Taylor (Don), three brothers, Lonny, Arthur and Willy; three sisters, Gertrude, Tommie Lee and Ruth, all of Tallassee, AL.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Vernie Tyler Brown Cantrell of Phenix City, AL; daughters, Lou Ann Cantrell Smith (Tom) and Janis Cantrell Redden (John) all of Phenix City, AL; step-children, Amy Brown Willis (Dan) of Atlanta, GA and Robert Brown (Patty) Smiths Station, AL; grandchildren, Jeff Redden (Ashley), Lorie Ward Harrison (Kenny), Joell Redden McWaters (Jonathan), Eric Ward (Tanya), Carolee Taylor, Brad Redden, Keith Brown (Phyllis), Tracie Belvin (Eric), Danny Willis (Dana), Todd Willis and Meridith Morris (Scott) ; 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; many extended family members and caring friends.
