Simmie Rudolph “Rudy” Harris, 85, of Phenix City, AL passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm EST Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenxi City with Rev. Bud Passmore officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm EST at the funeral home and also on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Harris was born July 31, 1930 in Phenix City, AL to the late Simmie D. Harris and Lydia Irene Bland Harris. He was retired from the Ledger Enquire with 44 years of service. Mr. Harris served our country as a Veteran of the United States Air Force and was a Baptist by faith. He had a passion for baseball and all kinds of sports. He played baseball and football for Central High School. He coached baseball for over 30 years, and had a passion for the Phenix City Boys Club; he also worked as a volunteer for Glenwood High School. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Katie Montez Horne Harris and a brother, Patrick Eugene Harris.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Thiele and husband Stephen of Cataula, GA, son, Michael Harris and wife Heidi of Phenix City, AL, three grandchildren, Stephen D’Angelo, Brook L. Machin (David), and Christy M. Harris, one very special little great granddaughter, Olivia Mills, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many caring friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to the Columbus Hospice House in memory of Mr. Rudy Harris.
