Sophia “Mildred” Underwood Newsome, 96, of Phenix City, AL passed away peacefully late Saturday night, August 6, 2016 in the comfort of her home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at 3:00pm EST at Vance Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jim Caldwell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. A private interment will follow the service at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Newsome was born September 7, 1919 in Malvern, AL to E. Cullen Underwood and Mettie Estelle Graham Underwood. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 33 years of service. She graduated from Slocomb High School in 1936 and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Phenix City. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 135 in Phenix City and was a lady of great character who loved everyone. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred T. Newsome, sister, Winnie Underwood, and a brother, Ewell Underwood.
She is survived by one brother, Homer Underwood of Graceville, FL, 4 nephews Toby Underwood, of Graceville, FL and Steve Underwood (Kim) of Birmingham, AL, Joel Underwood (Carolyn) of Cullman, AL and Luther Mann; 2 nieces, Elaine Layfield and Jan King; friend, and caregiver, Cindy Gibson of Phenix City, AL, numerous other extended family members, church family, and many friends.
