Winifred “Úna” Gross Hinson, 85, of Phenix City, AL died peacefully while at HCA Orange Park Hospital, Orange Park, FL on Monday, December 16, 2024.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 11:30 AM (EST) Friday, December 20, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father David Hamm officiating according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL. Interment will follow in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM (EST) until 8:00 PM on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Born in Galway, Ireland December 09, 1939, and one of nine siblings. At the age of 19 she immigrated to the USA. Úna proved to be an independent and resilient woman as she gained her GED, US citizenship, and college degree all while raising four children on her own and working her way up in the banking industry, as she would say “from the basement to the top floor”.
She had several passions and interests with her grandchildren being number one, as well as enjoying gardening, reading, travel, and time at the ocean. Úna’s favorite holiday was Christmas with Christmas Eve tea being the highlight of the season.
Úna volunteered in her community and was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Phenix City, Al., and also a member of Mary, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Fl.
Mrs. Hinson was preceded in death by her parents, Bartholomew and Brigid Hartey; husband, Marion Eugene “Gene” Hinson; siblings, Marie Hartey, Margaret Hartey Dowling, Seamus Hartey, Sean Hartey and Patrick Hartey; and a grandson, Justin Rey Diaz.
Survivors include her daughters, Kathleen Gross Drop (David), Orange Park, FL, Korina Gross Burton, Pensacola, FL and Karen Gross Drop (Andy), Phenix City, AL; one son, Kenneth Gross (Crystal), Braselton, GA; three siblings, Kay Dugan, England, Noreen Burke, Dublin, Ireland and Michael Hartey, Galway, Ireland; six grandchildren, Jared Diaz, Corpus Christi, TX, Kendall Gross Howell (Andy), Lawrenceville, GA, Kaleigh Gross Freel (Russell), Macon GA, Kassidy Gross, Braselton, GA, Sean Drop (Alex), Villa Rica, GA and Sarah Grace Drop Konie (Zak) Weatherford, TX; six great-grandchildren, Kallie Diaz, Rylee Diaz, Mary Clare Drop, Nathanael Drop, Adelaide Drop and Eleanor Freel; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
