Betty Lou Alexander Smith, 84, of Hattiesburg, MS, and formally of Ft. Benning, GA passed away early Wednesday morning, November 20, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am EST on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.  Interment will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband of 67 years; SFC (Retired) Luther Andrew Smith, Jr. who just recently passed in September.  The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am EST at the funeral home in Phenix City.

Mrs. Smith was born August 23, 1935 in Poplarville, MS, daughter of the late Sebron Newton Alexander and Bertha Helen Alexander.  She enjoyed reading and watching her favorite programs.  Mrs. Smith loved playing the piano, fishing, and spending time in the outdoors, and sewing and tailoring the family’s clothes.  She was valedictorian of her high school class. She was very supportive of her son’s musical career. For 26 years she was the best Army wife a soldier could want. Her greatest joy was spending time with her son Jerome Keith Smith, her daughter Donna Jalyn Sherrill and her beautiful grandchildren.  She was a Southern Baptist by faith. She was a very loved and sweet woman throughout her life.

She is survived by her son, Keith Smith and wife Theresa, daughter, Donna Smith Sherrill and husband Randy, (3) grandchildren, Chris Sherrill (Jennifer), Lindsay Tate (Terry), and Keith Smith. Jr., (6) great grandchildren; Alex Sherrill, Taylor Sherrill, Hannah Sherrill, and Sadie Sherrill, Lila Katherine Tate, and William Tate, and numerous other loving family members.
