Joi Elizabeth Powell

Joi Elizabeth Lupo Powell, 60, of Phenix City, passed away peacefully Thursday July 25th at Columbus Hospice House, with her loving family at her side. Joi was born January 26, 1959 in Columbus, GA, daughter of Dick Lupo and Ramona Stewart Lupo. She was preceded  in death by her parents and grandparents, Susie and Robert Stewart and Lillie and Irwin Day Lupo.

          She is survived by her loving husband, Calvin E. Powell, her sister Tori Funk and husband Tom, brother-in-law Buddy Powell and wife Sarah of Phenix City, sisters-in-law Delores Holton and husband Neil of Columbus, GA and Carolyn Snell and husband Roger of Atlanta, GA, and numerous loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives.

          Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Joi’s name was perfect for her, because that’s exactly what she brought to her family, friends, and especially her beloved husband Calvin – JOY, love, and laughter.

          She was incredibly devoted to her family. She lost her mother in 1981 and took care of her Daddy in his later years with tremendous love. She was a wonderful and loving sister to Tori, and they shared many fun shopping trips and other adventures throughout their lives.

          Joi and Calvin met when they were children, attending the Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega. They lost touch when they grew up, but reconnected in 2013 when they were re-introduced by their mutual friend Doris. It was love at first sight. They became inseparable. Joi was a devoted helpmate as Calvin cared for his mother. The three of them went everywhere together, and loved exploring flea markets, thrift shops, and antique stores.

          In 2017, Joi and Calvin pledged their love for each other forever and married at the Log Cabin in Phenix City. It was the happiest day of Joi’s life.

          Joi and Calvin loved spending time together talking, laughing, and sitting in the swing watching the birds, trees, and sky. They prayed together and shared a deep faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

          Joi was a talented artist, who had no formal training in art, but painted and drew incredible works of art. Many of her family members and friends have original art pieces created by Joi, hanging in their homes and offices.

          Joi’s life was met with many challenges, but she faced every difficulty with amazing strength, courage, and faith in God. She never gave up, no matter what she had to face.

          She was a true hero to all those who knew and loved her, and she will always be remembered for her love, her humor, and her courage.

          Joi will be missed more than words can express, until we are re-united forever in Heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ.
