Mr. F. L. “Bubba” Copeland, Jr., 49, of Smiths Station, AL passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023.

The family will receive friends on the evening of Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 4:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm EST on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at First Baptist Church in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Dr. Ralph Wooten officiating. A private interment will follow.

Bubba was born May 27, 1974, in Columbus, GA son of Fred L. Copeland, Sr. and Cora Annell Flowers Green. Bubba owned and operated the Country Market in Salem, AL. Additionally, he was Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Phenix City, AL, where he attended and worshipped for more than three decades.

Bubba’s first foray into politics was when he successfully ran for the Lee County School Board’s District 5 seat, a position he held over the course of two terms from 2008-2016.

In 2016, Bubba was elected as Mayor of his beloved hometown and City of Smiths Station, AL. During his tenure as Mayor, he helped guide the City through a period of tremendous growth and development, and earn its place as one of the fastest growing Cities in the State of Alabama.

But above all, beyond serving his church, city, and community, Bubba loved spending time with his family and serving his community.

He is survived by his loving wife Angela Simpson Copeland of Smiths Station,AL; his mother, Cora Annell Flowers Green and husband Hershal of Phenix City, AL; his father, Fred L. Copeland Sr. and wife Cheryl of Valley, AL; a son, Carter L. Copeland of Smiths Station, AL; two daughters, AbbyKate Elizabeth Dawson and Ally Catherine Dawson, both of Smiths Station, AL; three sisters, Kimberlee Copeland Funk and husband Stephen of Smiths Station, AL, Terri Register and husband Noel of Fountain, FL and Ginger Green of Smiths Station, AL; two brothers, Mike Green and wife Mardelle of Smiths Station, AL and Bill Green and wife Brandy of Waverly Hall, GA; Precious In-laws Tim and Pam Simpson of Hatchechubbee, AL one Brother In Law Jonathan Simpson wife Bridgette of Hatchechubbee, AL two nieces Brinklee Cope Funk and Everly Blake Simpson one Nephew Ezekiel Ray Simpson and a cousin Jason Flowers, as well as many extended family, church family and extremely close friends.

Pall bearers are: Jason Flowers, Jeff Smith, Ed Adams, Jonathan Simpson, Stephen Funk, and Allen Belcher.

The story of Bubba's tragic passing touched my heart all the way up in Canada. I can't imagine what you are all going through in this hour, and what you all have gone through. By all accounts Bubba was deeply loved, I trust he is at peace with his savior and Lord. Bubba Copeland was someone’s dad, someone’s son, someone’s husband, someone’s relative, someone’s friend, someone’s guide to Christ, someone’s hero when devastating weather struck his town and someone who had such a kind and bright spirit. God knows us. He knows our hearts and that sometimes things are just too much and become out of our realm of endurance capabilities. He shows mercy. He shows grace. He shows love; and He welcomes the pained to a place where we don't need coping mechanisms because we are sitting next to Him. Much support to Bubba’s family, especially his son, mother, wife, father, etc.

Sending thoughts and prayers to all of Bubba's family. I heard a song today by Tim McGraw about living a life that's well remembered and at the end of life having standing room only. I know Bubba will be well remembered for his kind deeds and gentle soul. Please know you all have many prayers being said for peace and comfort.

I have had you in my my thoughts ever since I heard and I wish I could be there for the funeral, it just isn’t possible for me to be on the road right now. I will miss Bubba’s sermons on Sunday.

My wife and I met Bubba and Carter in Nashville at the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015 - he struck up a conversation with us, and we've been friends ever since. Bubba was so kind to us - taking the time to send birthday greetings, calling around Christmas, sending us Auburn / Smiths Station related care packages. We talked about life, struggles, and the importance of friends and family. I'm still in shock - Bubba, I'll miss you - rest in peace, my friend.

I don’t know you. I have been never in your shoes or your family’s in this particular way. I do know the love of Jesus and His command to love one another. I do know fear and confusion and loneliness, despair and hopelessness. We might not understand but we trust the Lord has got this under His control. I remember spending time with Bubba and the family at my great uncle Fred’s house when I was a kid. I didn’t spend a lot of time with my extended family, but I cherish the time I did. I heard of the loss of this wonderful man on NPR radio. I was never fortunate to meet him but was so moved by the story of who he was, I had to send my sincere condolences to Mr. Copeland's family, friends, community, and church family. I am deeply saddened about Bubba. We go way back when we were managers at Piggly Wiggly on stadium drive in Phenix City, and worked together a long time. I cannot imagine what his family is going through and what they may be feeling. Our family sends our deepest condolences and love and nothing but respect for Bubba and his family.

Bubba was the youth pastor when my children attended First Baptist. They have fond memories of Bubba, as do I. I’m sorry that he couldn’t see a way through the storm. I first met Bubba when we worked at Piggly Wiggly back in the 1990's. He was a very sweet young man then and grew to be a good man. He did good things for Smiths. I hate this happened to such a good man. My prayers are with his family.

I will always remember Mayor Copeland for his response to the 2019 tornado, specifically when he personally delivered a teddy bear to every child in my daughter’s kindergarten class. He wanted them to have something to comfort them if they ever went through another storm. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of losing such good and dear person. I just want to say thank you, Bubba. it has always been a pleasure whenever or paths did cross and I am going to miss you. Love to Fred and family always; and may the road to your peace be filled with the blessings of your child's sweet memories.

Bubba was such a good person and full of love for everyone. He always made people like they were the most important person in the world. When I called him or sent a text if he didn't answer right then, it would only be a few minutes before he answered. If I missed Church a couple of Sundays, he would call or text. He would say Hey I'm just checking on you, we missed you today. Is everything okay. We will miss him so much. My prayer to his family. We love them too.

Family, my heart is shattered and broken. I pray for your strength during this horrendous time. Only God and time will be able help us through this. Bubba will always be Bubba to me. We worked together for many years at the Chevron in Smith's, and I will always cherish those memories. May God be with you. Sandra Cook or(Sandy, as Bubba would call me)

I remember Bubba and his family always coming to Red Robin. He always had a kind spirit about himself.

Pastor Copeland and his church family prayed for me as I was battling cancer and other illnesses. Now it is my turn to pray for Brother Copeland, his family and church family. God has all the power to help heal all wounds. God bless you all.
